Engine House, Mountain Mine: |
- The
stone masonry to the engine house and adjacent boiler house had
been severely damaged during the removal of machinery following
decommissioning. The roof had also been removed. Further damage
to the engine house occurred due to an explosion, by demonstrators.
General weathering, in this very exposed location, had led to
deterioration of the mortar, exposed wall tops, the integral chimney,
timber lintels and timbering to the flywheel loadings
- The
constituents of the mortar were established by analysis to ensure
compatibility for the repair. Compatible bricks were located for
the reconstruction work to the top section of the chimney, the
lower part of the chimney being of stone masonry. Reconstruction
of damaged stone areas was undertaken, using either recovered
stone from the site or local matching stone, bedded on the compatible
mortar (local sands and lime). Where additional stability of existing
masonry was undertaken using an injected lime based grout. Replacement
timbers were obtained from a local supplier. Due to the initial
instability of the engine house it was specified that the scaffolding
needed to be self-supporting, with no tying to the masonry.
